The Conventional Self Exists Only for the Relative Mind
During mahamudra meditation we are not trying to destroy the conventional view of I — anyway, this is not the problem. The great yogi, the enlightened one Tilopa, said to his disciple Naropa, “My son, you are not bound by awareness itself. You are kept in bondage by your concepts; they have such a tight hold.”
In other words, the reflection of phenomena appearing in my mind is not itself the problem. The problem is that we stimulate the mind, shake the mind with the dualistic opinions: you are this, you are that. So we need to learn to not judge with such artificial concepts: this is good, that is bad. You understand? We need to eliminate this kind of thinking and to broaden our view of reality.
I want you to understand that the conventional I exists only for the conventional mind, a valid conventional mind. But ego-mind feels that there is an I here that isn’t dependent, that exists without depending on any other phenomenon, that is solid. That is ego’s concept.
Conventional, relative Coca-Cola operates only for the relative mind. It is not possible for Coca-Cola to become absolute. It is a combination of elements gathered together, then we give it a name, then it becomes Coca-Cola. It’s the same with ourselves: what we call “I am this, I am that” is only the connection between the name and the elements. That’s the only way we exist.
Because of our superstitions, our delusions, we create the fantasy of conventional existence. But the ego-mind doesn’t want to accept this; it wants to make it absolute. But it’s not possible.
